Every decade sees a new wedding trend.
There are new playlists, new choreography, new methods of photography, and of course, new trending outfits.
Over the years, the maximum changes that took place in India’s wedding are the photography style. The photographs evolved from monochrome to candids.
In recent years, cinema and celebrities have had a great influence on people's wedding choices.
Let's take a look at the evolution of western wedding photography!
Let's take a look at the 90's
"Wah wah ram ji, Jodi Kya banayi"
"Mehendi laga ke rakhnaa, doli sajaa ke rakhnaa"
"Joote de do, paise le lo!"
"Saajanji ghar aaye hay, saajanji ghar aaye, dulhan kyon sharmaaye hay, saajanji ghar aaye"
The 90's were all about these songs in India.
These tunes made everyone sing along and showed how much Bollywood had an influence during the wedding season.
One of the biggest movie that that had an influence on weddings was "Hum aapke Hai Kaun"
It stole everyone’s heart and is an evergreen movie.
Madhuri Dixit wore a ravishing purple lehenga with a backless blouse which inspired many brides to go for low back blouses in their wedding attire.
Another influencing movie was the most beloved " Dil Waale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge"
In the movie, Kajol's green lehenga inspired many brides. It had golden embroidery.
This kick started the trend of embroidery in India.
Around the world, the decade also saw weddings of various celebrities like Madhuri Dixit, Kajol and Ajay Devgan, Jada Pinkett and Will Smith, Victoria and David Beckham.
In the 90's, we experienced an edgy modernity in dress and makeup. The wedding photography evolved from black and white to colour. These things made the profession of wedding photography flourish in the country.
The poses were flashy and forced to put emphasis on the femininity of brides and masculine charm of men.
These photographs were developed through the reel and then were put in an album.
Then came the turn of the century! (2000-2010)
"Bole chudiyan, Bole kangana !!!! "
"Tere maathe jhumar damke, tere kano baali chamke hai re, Maahi Ve !! "
"Tennu le me mai jaawanga, dil de ke main jaawanga!"
"Saas gaari deve, devarji samjha leve, sasural genda phool"
The music, and the way music was made changed in this decade.
In the years between 2000 to 2010, the music, and the way that music was made, changed in this decade. You can see the contrast in the first song Bole chudiyan from the movie Kabhi khushi kabhi gum, which was released in 2001 , and the last song Genda phool, from the movie Delhi 6, which was released in 2009.
These tunes defined the weddings in this decade.
Bollywood influencing dresses were Kareena Kapoor's pink lehenga in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam, and Preeti Zinta's blue lehenga from Kal Ho Na Ho.
Everybody wanted something of that sort in the wedding.
At this time the designer theme and dresses were available to the middle class as were and were not limited. Hence, the trend of photography also had to alter.
Brides opened up, and started asking for getting photographs clicked. The concept of 'forced poses' started to fade away.
With concepts incorporated in photography and the art of candid taking its way to the hall of fame, brides came up with great ideas and every year there was something or the other new in Indian wedding photography taking over.
Then there were the vogue marriages of celebrities like Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra, Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman, and many more!
Now, let's talk about he most recent past! (2010-2020)
" Mai toh aviein aviein avien avien lutt Gaya"
"Tu ghanti big ben di, poora london thumakda!"
"Banno re banno meri chali sasuraal ko, akhiyon me paani de gayi"
" Mud ke na dekho dilbaro, dilbaro.. "
These are the songs that you must have heard in the recent Indian wedding events.
This decade gave rise to Social Media, and it took weddings to a whole other level. Photography took a new turn with social media becoming the biggest hit in everyone’s life.
Social media gave a new turn to Indian wedding photography as it is now A-Must part of your marriage.
This decade saw two Royal Weddings - Catherine Middleton and Prince William (2011), and Meghan Markle and Prince Harry (2018) that became a big influence amongst the crowd.
Another influence in in the recent times are the marriages of famous Indian celebrities like Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Sings, and Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma.
Now for brides, there is pre-wedding shoot, bridal photography, candid, couple and so many more. All the photographs now have excellently thought themes as well as props to make it look complete. The whole weddings are recorded and albums are printed differently. Infact, they aren't just normally video recorded anymore, but they've been made more interesting by shooting the whole ceremony with drones!
