PASSAGE

The little fish who made new friends

Hi! I’m a little blue fish in the deep blue sea, and I love to swim around to explore everything. I’ve got lots of friends and a very big family who always protects me and plays with me.

One day; before lunch, I wandered aimlessly; swimming all around the world that was sparkly and blue! Then I saw a purple octopus who was coming to attack me because he was very hungry!

So I said to him “I’m a little fishy swimming in the sea. Please please Mr Octopus don’t squeeze me!  I’ve got a big family and a lot of friends; that you can come and play with! And my momma’s making lunch today!”

Then Mr Octopus and I became friends!

Late that afternoon before dinner I swam down to the ocean floor.

Why?

Because I wanted to gather all the treasure that was lying around!

But underneath the sand, a huge black ray was hiding patiently and I did not see him until he jumped on me!

So I said to him “I’m a little fishy swimming in the sea. Please please Mr Stingray don’t sting me. I’ve got a big family and a lot of friends; that you can come and play with! And my daddy’s making dinner today!

Then Mr Stingray and I became friends!

Now the day has passed and I’m safely in my bed. It was so much fun to explore new things and make new friends!

Noi cannot wait to see what tomorrow has in store. When I wake up in the morning I’ll be ready to go on more adventures to explore the great unknown!


Trainer Notes:

The students will be given this listening comp. in the class itself. The trainer would assist the students in case there’s a difficulty in understanding the comprehension.

The focus of this listening activity will be on the student’s listening skills.

In addition, there are a number of questions below. These questions can be used to discuss the story. The questions may be altered as per the requirement of the group. Some questions may have additional instructions on how they need to be conducted.

Activity 1

Section 1 - Improving Listening Skills

Instructions: Hey let’s see if you can answer these questions!

Can you recall which animals were talked about in the story?

Trainer Notes:

The focus of this activity will be common nouns. The trainer can try and explain that different animal categories like octopus and stingfish are common nouns however when we say Nr Octopus and Nr Stingray they become proper nouns.

Later you can ask the students - What are the other creatures that live in the sea?

How many of these animals can you identify?



Trainer Notes: This would be a vocabulary question. You can help the students identify these animals and then show them their real pictures on google.

What was the colour of the little fish?

Trainer Notes:

The colours of the octopus and the stingray can also be asked. Later the discussion could be about the student’s favourite colors.

You can also ask the question - What are the common colours you find in the ocean?

How did the little fish and the octopus become friends?

Trainer Notes:

This would help us understand how well the student can retain the information that has been given. This question can be used to get the discussion started about how to make new friends. You can also ask the student - Who was the first friend that you ever make? How did you become friends with them?

To solve this puzzle you can show some hints to the student. You can show the following images or give the following hints:

Shark - a very huge and dangerous fish which has very sharp teeth. The first letter of the word is “s”

Ocean -


Tentacles - an octopus has 8 of these!

Marine - anything that is connected with the sea

Fish - the sea is filled with these animals! The first letter of the word is “f”

Sea - it is a large area of saltwater! It may be part of the ocean or maybe surrounded by land!

Activity 3 Home Assignment

Section 1 - Home Assignment 1

Instructions: Hey let’s see if you can draw any of these!

                      



Trainer Notes:

Here our focus would be to give an interesting activity to the students that would increase their vocabulary. For example, while drawing the fish we could tell the student what fins; scales; and gills are. Similarly while drawing an octopus the student can be told about the mantle and tentacles.
